Susan True grew up in southwest Minneapolis, Minnesota before she came to Santa Cruz in 1991, having discovered UCSC "while searching for the smallest, highest rated public university in the country." During her time here, True volunteered with the Santa Cruz AIDS Project to implement HIV-prevention programs within the University of California. True graduated in Community Studies at UC Santa Cruz.

Since then, she’s built a diverse career as a community leader, most notably as the executive director of two prominent local children’s health organizations, CASA of Santa Cruz County and First 5 Santa Cruz County. Through her work at CASA and First 5, True already has deep roots in the local philanthropic community and she has intimate experience with the social needs of Santa Cruz County. Susan admits that she never thought she would be here her whole life but that she’s eager to engage and take the long view with her donor base within her new position as the CEO of the Santa Cruz Community Foundation.
