The UCSC Arts Division presents Los Mejicas annual Spring show ‘Grupo Folklorico’

As one of the oldest organizations on campus, Los Mejicas has over half a century of bringing people together to celebrate their Mexican heritage. Their upcoming annual spring show, which marks the 52nd anniversary of the groups existence, celebrates traditional dance forms from six different regions in Mexico.

In recognition of her globally significant research accomplishments, Community Studies Professor Julie Guthman has received the prestigious Martin Chemers Award for Outstanding Research in UCSC's Social Science Division. Professor Guthman is perhaps best known for her path breaking scholarship on the political economy of organic agriculture in the book Agrarian Dreams.

This fall, we introduced the Community Studies Race Conference Fellowship to cover expenses for up to two students to attend a national conference that addresses race and social justice. Our fellowship could not have been timelier. As we write this note, it feels like nearly every day and across the country, another policeman has gunned down another child or young person of color. Most victims but certainly not all are male; most but certainly not all are African American. To date, nearly all of the courts have refused to indict the killers.

It was just over a year ago that Community Studies alumna Elizabeth (Beth) Butler (’96) died while investigating a domestic violence complaint as a Santa Cruz police detective, along with her colleague Butch Baker. Beth was a vibrant presence in Santa Cruz as a police officer, mother of two young sons, loving partner to Peter Wu and all around community stalwart.
