Katharyne Mitchell is a Distinguished Professor of Sociology at the University of California, Santa Cruz. She received her PhD in Geography from UC Berkeley and her BA in Art and Archaeology from Princeton University. Before joining UCSC she was a professor and the chair of the Department of Geography at the University of Washington, Seattle. She has held positions as the Simpson Professor of Public Scholarship and the Director of Canadian Studies at the University of Washington, and the Dean of Social Sciences at UCSC. She has held a visiting professorship at St. Catherine's College, University of Oxford, and many residential fellowships, including an Isaac Manasseh Meyer Fellow at the National University of Singapore, and a distinguished senior fellowship at the Max Planck Institute in Göttingen, Germany. She is the recipient of awards from the Guggenheim Foundation, Brocher Foundation, and MacArthur Foundation, and a senior research award from the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation. She was the editor of the journal Progress in Human Geography, book reviews editor of the Annals of the American Association of Geographers, and has served on the editorial boards of multiple other journals. Mitchell is the author or editor of 13 books and special issues and over a hundred articles and chapters. Her work examines processes related to migration, transnationalism, urban restructuring, and dispossession.
