Biography
Shelia
Turner is
a photographer
and visual
researcher.
Her documentary
style photographic
studies reflect
the hybrid
of North
American
culture,
socially,
politically,
and economically
providing
a forum for
the examination
of American
culture.
Her most
recent project, “Out
My Window
and Around
My Door,” involves
the exploration
of the less
literal interpretations
within photography
and goes
beyond the
traditional
documentary
service of
seizing the
metaphorical
moment by
concentrating,
for 16 years,
on the everyday
life within
one urban
neighborhood
located in
the southern
region of
the United
States. This
poignant
social documentary
is also significant
in defying
the “rural” stereotype
that often
characterizes
the North
American
south.
Ms. Turner’s
photographs
have been
exhibited
at the Museum
of Contemporary
Art of Georgia,
Agnes Scott
College,
Decatur,
GA, Clemson
University,
Clemson,
SC, The Museum
of African
American
Art, and
Philadelphia,
PA.
Her Master’s
thesis project
will explore
the notion
of North
American
identity.
