CMMU 100A-Z Course Offerings

All 100 A-Z courses are enrolled on an “interview only” basis; admission is determined at the first class meeting. Enrollment is limited to a maximum of 20-25 students. Note: Not every 100A-Z course is offered every year.

Your decision on which CMMU 100A-Z course to take should be based solely on which seminar matches your own social justice and field study focus. These courses are offered in the fall and winter quarters only, so please plan accordingly.

CMMU 100A - Theory and Practice of Race & Racism in American Society - David Wellman
Explores four major theoretical frameworks, which purport to explain the origins and functions of racism in American society in order to assess the practical and political implications that follow from each one.

CMMU 100B - Theory and Practice of Media and Social Change - Renee Tajima-Peña
Uses case study approach to analyze use of films and videos in relation to social change movements. Students produce a video as final project.

CMMU 100E - Theory and Practice of Economic Justice - Mary Beth Pudup
Examines emergence of multi-faceted economic justice movement in the U.S., targeting inequalities arising from contemporary capitalist structures such as the labor market, credit market, and housing market. Emphasis placed on theory and practices of specific organizations around issues related to gender, race, communities, and workplaces.

CMMU 100J - Theory and Practice of Immigration and Social Justice - David Brundage
Provides an introduction to contemporary U.S. immigration patterns and policies, to the major problems facing immigrant communities and to the theory and practice of immigrant and their allies in confronting these problems and working for social justice.

CMMU 100M - Theory and Practice of Health Care Inequalities - Andrea Steiner
This course examines the system and non-system that is American health care, with special attention to inequalities in access, financing, and quality of care. Covers concepts like equality, fairness, and need, as well as community organizing and community-building for health.

CMMU 100T - Theory and Practice of Agriculture, Food and Social Justice– Julie Guthman
Examines the intertwined problems of food insecurity, cheap labor, sub-optimal nutrition, and ecological degradation in contemporary food systems. Assesses both theoretical and practical efforts to link social justice, food quality, and ecological sustainability in alternative food and agriculture movements.

CMMU 100V - Theory and Practice of the Politics of Culture - B. Ruby Rich
Examination and analysis of structures and strategies governing the cultural sector, including but not limited to film exhibition and distribution, "entertainment" journalism, and the art world.

CMMU 100X - Theory and Practice of Sex, Gender and Sexuality– Marcia Ochoa
How do people produce and politicize sex, gender and sexuality or their bodies? How are these represented and disciplined? Topics include transgender, sex work, feminist and queer realities. Materials include testimonials, films, ethnography, social theory and clinical texts.
