February 29, 2008

On February 26, 2008, the Los Angeles Times Online ran an article by columnist Sandy Banks titled "Why the Hostility Toward Differences?" This article features an interview with Shakina Nayfack, a Community Studies alumni who focused on cultural work and social change during his time with the program. The full text of the article featuring Shakina can be viewed through the Los Angeles Times news archive by clicking on the title above.

Hello Community Studies Alumni,

Welcome to the Alumni section of the Community Studies website. We're excited about this addition, and anticipate the alumni page will be a work in progress (at least for a while). We welcome your ideas - let us know what you'd like to see and how you envision the alumni page.

To begin with, we would like to feature news items and/or articles about our alumni and the work they're doing. If you would like to be featured, please send us a brief "bio" or article about the work you're doing, along with a picture (head shot or action shot). Email the information to Joanie Peterson at peterson@ucsc.edu.

On a related note, there is currently a Yahoo group for Community Studies alumni. Paris Marron, class of 2005, graciously offered to be the moderator of the group. If you're interested, check out the url below:

Finally, we will be creating an annual newsletter that will be posted on this website; the first edition will come out next summer at the latest (we hope it will be earlier). It will feature news about current students, staff, faculty and alumni.

Once again, welcome - if you have any questions, please feel free to contact Joanie Peterson at peterson@ucsc.edu.
