Support Community Studies

Yes, it is true we told you that a degree in Community Studies would lead to meaningful work and a chance to change the world. So now you ask, "How can I give back to this wonderful program that set me on the road to riches?" Or perhaps you are just a person out there somewhere in cyberspace; you've eyeballed our web page and you're thinking, "what a wonderful program -- helping prepare all these young people to make our world a better place -- how can I contribute to such a wonderful enterprise?"

Well, we have the answer to these burning questions: You could make a financial contribution to the Community Studies Program. In that connection, we are also very happy to report on a new venture the department is launching: an endowment campaign to secure the future of the field study program which came under particular attack during the spring. Community Studies is celebrating its 40th year as an unique, interdisciplinary undergraduate major at UCSC and our aim is to raise funds to make sure we are around for the next 40 years—and beyond.

In honor of this milestone, our endowment campaign is called “40 for 40.” Our plan is to raise (gulp) a half million dollars in the way we know best: from the ground up. We are asking 4,000 people to contribute $40. The sum of those relatively small donations will raise a whopping $160,000. We are also asking 400 people with deeper pockets to contribute $400. That will net another $160,000. Finally, we are asking the $4,000 from the deepest pockets we know to gather in $160,000 more. This will bring us very, very close to the half million dollar mark. Along the way, we’ll be seeking contributions from foundations and other institutions in a position to make larger contributions.

Opportunites to support our department are not limited to monetary contributions. If you are interested in becoming part of our field study program by sponsoring one of our students, see our Internship Sponsor Information.
